El almirante Nelson / Admiral Nelson

Durante mucho tiempo los ingleses quisieron conquistar las Islas Canarias por ser un punto estratégico en la ruta hacia América. El gobierno inglés financió a los corsarios para que hiciera esta labor, que a la larga fue infructuosa. Uno de los más importantes militares de la flota inglesa fue el encargado de intentarlo a finales del siglo XVIII.

El quaterback historico de la armada inglesa, el Almirante Nelson, antes de dar su vida en Trafalgar ante unas tropas dirigidas por la más absoluta ineptitud de mando francés, perdió un brazo en el intento de tomar Santa Cruz de Tenerife. El cañon responsable, modelo tigre, está en el Museo militar de Canarias.

En aquel ataque, en el que Nelson afirmó que había tenido que luchar contra 8.000 defensores, cuando en realidad sólo fueron 1.700, todo un hombre de honor. Según el parte rendido por Nelson a su superior, tuvo un total de 349 bajas, en cambio, las bajas españolas se redujeron a 72.
