El Gran Capitán // The Great Captain

Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba y Aguilar (Montilla, 1453 – Granada, 1515), noble, político y militar español, duque de Santangelo, de Terranova y de Sessa, llamado por su excelencia en el arte de la guerra el Gran Capitán.

Fue el padre de los viejos tercios españoles, temidos en todo el mundo e invictos durante mas de 200 años con frentes por toda la faz de la tierra.

Es considerado por los historiadores internacionales como unos de los máximos exponentes en estrategia militar de la historia, de ahí su sobrenombre, no tuvo precedentes similares hasta la aparición de Napoleón Bonaparte.

Adies­tró a sus hombres mediante una disciplina rigurosa y formó su moral despertando en ellos el orgullo de cuerpo, la dignidad personal, el sentido del honor nacional y el interés religioso.

Fue el artífice de batallas brillantes por su estrategia como Ceriñola y Garellano, comentadas en este mismo blog y ejecutadas en una notable inferioridad numérica.

 Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, Duke of Terranova and Santangelo, also known simply as Gonzalo de Córdoba (Italian: Consalvo di Cordova, September 1, 1453–December 2, 1515), was a Spanish general who made Spain the preeminent world military power for almost a century and half. He was called El Gran Capitán ("The Great Captain") by contemporaries and "the Father of Trench Warfare" by historians.

He was the father of Tercios, the Spanish infantry, this military forces were undefeated by 200 years with battles in all world.

The Great Captain was first among the founders of modern warfare. As a field commander he had no equal in the modern era until the rise of Napoleon. While European generals fought for the conquest of important strategic sites, de Cordoba, like Napoleon three centuries later, saw his goal in the destruction of the enemy army. He was the first European general who systematically organized the pursuit of defeated armies after a victory in order to destroy the retreating enemy.
