Batalla de Lepanto / Battle of Lepanto
La batalla de Lepanto, «la más alta ocasión que vieron los siglos», fue un combate naval de capital importancia que tuvo lugar el 7 de octubre de 1571 en el golfo de Lepanto, situado entre el Peloponeso y Epiro, en la Grecia continental.
Se enfrentaron en ella los turcos otomanos contra una coalición cristiana, llamada Liga Santa, formada por España, Venecia y la Santa Sede. Los cristianos resultaron vencedores, salvándose sólo 30 galeras turcas. Se frenó así el expansionismo turco por el Mediterráneo occidental. A pesar de la determinante participación de los estados italianos, la victoria se puede considerar española dado que el verdadero combate lo sostuvieron los tercios embarcados.
En esta batalla participó Miguel de Cervantes, que resultó herido, sufriendo la pérdida de movilidad de su mano izquierda, lo que valió el sobrenombre de «manco de Lepanto».

The battle of Lepanto, "the higher occasion that the centuries saw", was the most important naval combat of old times.
There, 216 Christian ships commanded by Spanish emperor, Don Jonh of Austria Vs 286 Turks ships commanded by Ali Pashs; the Turks lost 30,000 men and 187 ships... Christins lost 8,000 men and 12 ships.
The engagement was a crushing defeat for the Ottomans, who had not lost a major naval battle sinde the fiftheenth century. To half of Christendom, tis event encouraged hope for the downfall of "the Turk", whom they regarded as the "Sempiternal Enemy of the Christian". Some western historians have held it to be the most decisive naval battle anywhere on the globe since the battle os Actium of 31 BC.
